December 30 E-Journal

December 30, 2013

I have been enjoying working through Module 2 so far. I was very impressed with the Google Sites and how easy it was to create a web page. I realize my page is extremely simple but I am proud of it since I have never done anything like this before. I was having some difficulty with creating a link in my website so I just "googled" how to add a link and a google help site took me through it step by step.
In Module 2, the videos used were very good and helpful. I had to watch the videos multiple times and still was a little bit lost. The reason for this is that the videos are a little outdated and the Google sites has changed a bit. Other than that it was great.
I am going to continue working on personalizing my webpage. I think I am going to use it as a webpage to provide information to my parents. Each year I have to send home a communcation letter to my resource students parents and I could include this link in the letter.

So proud of myself for creating a blog!

I watched the video in Module 1 and quite enjoyed it. The only thing I found about it was that it was a little "out of date" but the statistics were very relevant and probably a lot worse today. Screen time was inaccurate and would like to know the current statistics.  I have a big issue with screen time and the amount that young children get. If we are spending so much time doing this than we are not exercising and doing other things. My children's paediatrician said that children should have one hour of screen time per day. I like to follow this most days but I know that on rainy days etc. there is more than one hour. Moderation is key.

I read Dede's article today. It made me question myself "What are 21st century skills?" How can we even really begin to define them? We do not really even know what the workforce is going to be like that we are preparing our students for. When it comes to technology it is forever changing. I cant keep up with it. I got out and buy a new iPhone and a couple months later there is a newer "improved" version out. Part of me feels that the entire technology market is just pure consumerism because they want consumers to always be going out and buying the latest greatest thing on the market? Not sure but I do know that I feel pressure to keep myself up to date on what the latest is so I can be in the "know."
When it come to skills to be taught in classrooms for the 21st century I feel that Dede did a great job of outlining what he thinks is important. However, I did not like the fact that he wrote that essay writing is a "routine task" and it does not apply to real life situations. I disagree because I feel that everyone would benefit from having basic essay writing skills. Perhaps the way in which the teacher delivers the lessons and the technology used for students to write it an essay could be more modern but the very task of writing an essay is anything but routine. Perhaps, after Dede made this statement about essay writing he should of written about how to make the skills of essay writing fit into 21st century skills. I think the most important thing for 21st century skills is to ensure that students are developing strong problem solving, communication an collaboration skills. If these skills are strong then no matter what the future brings then there will be success.

I have been thinking about my "Curriculum issue identification" and I am leaning towards looking into learning disabilities. I am a lower elementary resource teacher and I work with many students who are not yet diagnosed with a learning disability (testing/diagnosing does not take place until usually after grade 4). I am thinking of focusing my topic down to how certain Assistive Technology (AT) can help students manage their learning disability. I am mainly interested in this topic because, although, most students I work with are not "diagnosed/labelled" we can still provide effective programming for their particular needs.

I explored all the website on Module 1 today and I was a bit overwhelmed by all the information. The ISTE 2007 Student Profiles and NS ICT in schools were great documents. I am familiar with the Nova Scotia document and think the outcomes are amazing but at times a little unrealistic. This is where my practical "real world" self comes out. I think that some of the outcomes for the very young elementary students are a little more than is manageable by most classroom teachers. Yes, all the outcomes could be met if you had a small class size and students with no behavioural concerns. I am not vey familiar, in my experience so far, with many classes such as this. Most of the classroom teachers I work for and with have more than 25 students and a lot of behavioural and academic concerns.
